Sports complex construction set to resume soon

Construction of the much-touted sport-cum-commercial complex of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) at Cidco N10 that was halted one-and-a-half years ago resume soon as the Cidco authorities on Tuesday have hinted at giving green signal to the project.

The construction was halted after the Cidco authorities asked the municipal administration to obtain a formal no objection certificate (NOC) from them. "Earlier, when the land was in Cidco's possession, it was reserved for a stadium. But the AMC started building a commercial and sport complex without informing the Cidco. Now, the civic body has made some changes in the plan and submitted a fresh proposal. The Cidco may approve the project within a day or to in the larger interest of the city," a senior Cidco officer said. The Cidco is likely to approve the project during their meeting with municipal authorities on Wednesday.

The project was supposed to be completed by November 2014 but the authorities could complete less than 10% of the construction so far. The AMC, which had raised Rs 12.5 crore through auction of shops in the complex in February last year, would require only around Rs 5 crore to complete the project.

The civic body had said that absence of a green signal from the Cidco was the main reason for the delay. "Earlier, the land was in Cidco's possession; so, we needed an official approval from it. We have been constantly pursuing the issue and hope to get the approval soon," said a senior civic official. The AMC is building 50 shops in the complex which are leased out for a period of 30 years.

The cash-strapped civic body, which has been developing many commercial complexes under the build-operate, and transfer (BOT) model, had adopted a different route for developing the sport complex. It is coming up on a three-acre land reserved for sports ground. Under the project, the civic body will build a football stadium with two basketball courts in it. On the periphery of the stadium, 50 shops also will be constructed.
