Plastic company gutted

A plastic processing and granules making company was reduced to ashes in an inferno causing hefty losses of over Rs 70 lakh in the Chikalthana industrial estate in the early hours of Tuesday.
The company that sustained heavy losses in the fire has been identified as Rajkamal Plastic Industries Limited. The chief of the Chikalthana fire brigade officials, Shakil Ahmed, said that firefighters and locals had to struggle for over five hours to extinguish the fire that even engulfed three goods vehicles that were parked in the factory compound.
On a complaint lodged by the company owner, the MIDC Cidco police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the fire.
Ahmed said that the fire brigade received information from the police control room around 6 am. Soon, four fire tenders from the Chikalthana MIDC area rushed to the spot but till then the fire had spread to the raw material stock in the compound. Owing to the wind, a truck (MWV-9009), a jeep (MH-04-5667) and a pick-up van (MH-43-6089), which were parked in the compound, were burnt. The vehicles contained plastic raw material that made it difficult for the officials to douse the flames. Fire officials are also trying to ascertain if there were any fire-extinguishers installed at the unit as the fire anytime during the day would have even caused human casualties. Following the incident, unit owner Mohammed Noor lodged a complaint with the police and investigation in to the case is on.
