In a surprising development, Shiv Sena leaders on Monday pressed their demand for developing Japanese Garden on Salem Ali Lake campus.
The demand highlights the ongoing tug-of-war between the Shiv Sena and BJP.
It may be noted here that Dr Salem Ali Lake Conservation Committee had registered their protest and submitted a memorandum to deputy mayor (of BJP) Sanjay Joshi recently.
While informing the newsmen, house leader Sushil Khedkar and group leader Gajanan Barwal clarified that they are not environmentalists but the issue of garden is a social issue and it is for the majority of citizens.
Barwal said, "It would not be wise to oppose the Japanese Garden unless it is developed." While Khedkar underlined," If the boating violates the norms it would be excluded from the proposal."
Few days ago the committee office-bearers Vijay Deewan, Nirmal Dada, Arvind Pujari, Kishore Pathak, Nishikant Bhalerao and others had registered their protest before the deputy mayor stating that the development of Japanese Garden would attract rush of visitors and it will distract the migratory birds from visiting the lake. The committee had also claimed that this will cause harm to bio-diversity of the lake and campus as per its 2002 Act.
