n Braving heavy rains, protest ban on flavoured betel nut, tobacco
Several paan stall owners from the city organized a morcha amid heavy rains to protest against the decision of the Food and Drug Administration to ban the flavoured beetle nut and tobacco products. Terming the ban as illegal, they warned of approaching court.
All the paan stall owners, retailers and wholesale dealers of betel nut took part in the morcha that headed from Paithan Gate towards the collector office. The associations presented a memorandum to additional collector K M Lavande urging him to reconsider the decision.
Vikas Sahuji, Haji Sharfoddin Siddiqui, Laxmikant Dahiwal on behalf of the paan stalls owners and their associations spoke to the media. They alleged that the government did not consider the say of the paan stall owners and other paan traders before passing the resolution. They asked, "If the flavoured betel nut is harmful for health, what about the imported cigarettes and other tobacco products? Why are they not banned?" They pointed out that survival of more than five lakh paan shopkeepers and 75 lakh hawkers was in jeopardy.
