Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Bamu) has made unique identification (UID) number, also known as Aadhaar number, compulsory for availing scholarship from the academic year 2013-14.
Notably, the Central and the State Government have decided to deposit money under various welfare schemes and scholarship amount directly into the accounts of beneficiaries.
Every year, hundreds of students of the university avail scholarship. The State Government has, therefore, asked all the universities to link Aadhaar number of students to their bank accounts.
Following which, director of the Board of College and University Development Dr M S Shingare has written to all department heads directing them to make Aadhaar number compulsory for availing scholarship.
A centre has been started at the Students Welfare Department, Bamu, to help students enrol for Aadhaar number, Dr Shingare stated in the letter.
He said no student would get scholarship from the Social Welfare Department and other departments in the coming academic year without an UID number.
For UID number enrolment, students will have to bring any one of the following documents: (for identity proof) election ID card, driving licence, PAN card or passport and, for address proof, a light bill, bank passbook etc.
