Around 3,000 B Ed and M Ed degrees of teachers are at stake! Reason: the education department of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Bamu), its Osmanabad sub-centre and seven other colleges have failed to obtain the mandatory permission from the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE) to run these courses.
Sources said the university education department, Osmanabad sub-centre and seven other colleges had started B Ed and M Ed (vacation) courses in 2008 for untrained teachers.
There are 400 seats for B Ed and 200 for M Ed and currently the university charges Rs 36,000 for a B Ed course and Rs 40,000 for M Ed.
Around 3,000 teachers had either completed B Ed or M Ed during 2008-2013 from the university department, Osmanabad sub-centre and seven other colleges.
As per the norms, any institute which offers B Ed or M Ed course should have permission from a statutory body like the NCTE. The main objective of the NCTE is to achieve a planned and coordinated development of the teachers education system throughout the country and maintain standard of education.
Although the university strictly deals with its affiliated colleges when it comes to compliance of its norms, it failed to obtain NCTE permission for its own department and Osmanabad sub-centre! Even other colleges also failed to do so!!
If any institute does not secure permission from the NCTE, its degrees may be termed null and void.
Now, the office of the director of the Board of College and University Development (BCUD) has asked the university department, Osmanabad sub-centre and the seven colleges not to give admission for 2013-14.
When contacted, BCUD director Dr M S Shingare was not available for his comments.
Ironically, the education department of the university carries out the entire admission process of B Ed and M Ed vacation courses.
Apart from the university department and Osmanabad sub-centre, the colleges which have failed to get NCTE permission are: Vasantrao Naik College (Jalna), Jaiprakash Nayaran Education College (Aurangabad), Omshanti Education College (Beed), Shrikrishna College of Osmanabad, Saraswati College of Education (Ambejogai), Sant Gadgebaba Maharaj College of Education (Aurangabad) and Gurukul College of Education (Beed).
